Area activities
Pula is a city, most famous for its many well-preserved examples of ancient Roman architecture, the best known being its first century amphitheatre. Known locally as ‘Arena’, it is one of the finest from antiquity and functions today as a venue for summer film festivals. Other notable ancient Roman structures are the Arch of the Sergii (1st century) and the Temple of Rome and Augustus, built by the Roman emperor of that name. Ancient Roman paving stones form the surface of the narrow streets the city's old quarter, which today are lined with buildings from the Medieval and Renaissance periods.
Pula is an internationally popular summer vacation destination due to the azure waters of the Adriatic and the naturally beautiful surrounding countryside. The magnificent coast offers beaches, fishing, diving and sailing.
Brijuni National Park lies nearby, where Josip Broz Tito had his summer residence. Each area has its legends. Brioni are rescued piece of paradise on earth, separated from the rest of the world with a narrow strip of sea blue. Creator of earth intended to shape the image of Heaven on Earth. That was the Istra, as a garden overgrown with beautiful trees and meadows, surrounded by the blue sea, appealing people to a happier life. Everything would be so idyllic, that is not created by jealous devil who destroyed the work of the Creator by tearing the bag in which he was carrying the unused stones, and thousands of rocks scattered around the Istrian land. Country of contrasts, gentle and rough, fertile and barren, sunny and cloudy. The desolated angels gathered the pieces of Heaven remaining among the scattered rocks and protect them by the sea waves. They created Brijuni. And the angels still today fly above the beautiful Brioni islands and protect the islands from all evil.
Saint Jerome is an island in the archipelago of Brijuni. Together with the nearby island Kozada is located within the National Park Brijuni. The island is open, and for the safety of tourists care the employees of public institutions. The length of the island is 560 m and the highest peak is located at 18 m above sea level. The northern side of the island has stone pier with breakwaters. Depth at the pier heads is about 3 m. On the south side of the island is a perfect place to swim on the beach along the rocks surrounded by cypress trees. In early 90-ies of 20th century St. Jerome became an integral part of the National Park. Since the end of World War II to 90-it was a Slovenian resort for the disabled, and the girls from prisons and rehabilitation homes, which were often tattooed, what in those times caused astonishment. Domestic fishermen often cache themk by trying to swim to Fažana or Puntizela to escape from the island. Slovenians call St. Jerome Stenjak ( Rocky one), which had its support in the quarry and large rocks on the island. The quarry at St. Jerolim began exploited since the time of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The stone blocks were driving to Venice, Pula and Mali Brijuni. Stones were built all the houses on the island, which served as bedrooms. Island was before World War II owned by a family from Austria, which built at the top of the island a villa with garden and two wells. On the edge of a terrace of the villa was built a chapel in honor of patron St. Jerome, and so the island was named. Chapel is no longer visible, only basis. Below the hill is the entrance to the cave, which for the former Yugoslavia was cemented. During the bombing in the Second World War the cave was a safe haven for many locals from the nearby Štinjan. Although St. Jerome is uninhabited, on it still live five goats, 15-odd peacock and one of the largest colony of gulls in the northern Adriatic. Similar such a colony exists on the island of Fraškerić Banjol. Mediterranean beauty and idyllic St. Jerome disfigure many ruins, for which adaptation has not yet been planned.
